“Acting Organized!”
Most actors are to a degree disorganized when it comes to everyday living. It is how we are wired that makes us this way. However, we cannot use this as an excuse. There are a few things that we can do that will make our lives tick like a second hand on a pocket watch!
The first step toward any organization is writing down specfically what we want to organize! What “organized mess” would you like to change in your life? Is it those Backstage issues that you just cannot throw away? Perhaps its not being able to locate your updated photo or resume because your agent calls needing something current. What you need is a file cabinet. Start filing all of your important papers and photos toward the front of the top drawer. Save the bottom drawer(s) for less immediate things such as old tax forms or those back issues of Actors Magazine. Be flexible with how things are arranged. If you are particular about alphabetizing, do that. The important thing is learning to be organized.
Organization allows freedom to think clearly. It is more efficient and you will feel more successful in the “business of acting.”
Contacts are your bread and butter! How to organize them? An address book is a good idea, so is downloading them on your computer or phone calendar. Another way is a rolodex. No, not a watch! ( Although if you don’t have one of these you are in a bad way…) A rolodex for those who are not familiar is a small desktop file that holds names, phone numbers and other information all in a neat, compact holder. I recommend the address book and the computer system as well.
Finally a wall or desk calendar with the days big enough to write in. Staples, Walmart or an Office Max should carry them and they are not expensive.
I hope this article has helped my fellow actors and actresses! God Bless and break a leg!
