Is the second time a charm?
Many directors provide 2 days for actors to audition. This allows flexibility for our hectic schedules. Recently, I went to an audition for “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolfe?” The first evening I was energetic, full of life and somewhat nervous. It went very well. The director seemed pleased. The following evening was very different. My read was cold, showed lack of energy and seemed to fall from my mouth to the stage floor! When going to any audition the second time or for a call back always approach it as if it were for the first time. Confidence in what you did “yesterday” will never get you a part!
Call backs are because you have made a good impression. If curious about your competition, always ask the director or the A.D. if it is ok for you to come back and audition or watch in the wings. They may tell you that they have seen enough and politely thank you for coming. This is a good sign. Make your questions polite, confident and with a smile, a handshake or both. Practice this ritual even as you build lasting friendships with directors.
A director will hire an actor based not only on his or her talents, but on promptness, politeness, and consideration for others at the audition. So if you have those things in order your face will be remembered! I invite all readers to watch the video on Directing. It is 90 minutes long but is worth the time!
